PSG Face an Peculiar Challenge: Goal Lack in Ligue 1
“It’s both beautiful and frustrating,” remarks the team's head coach. The French club's coach has a complicated relationship with how his squad's league matches play out. Whenever the Parisians play, one team goes forward and the other sits back. “I enjoy facing defensive setups,” he asserts. “I have the most experience with this tactical scenario. I am very respectful of how other teams play. While it differs from our philosophy, I comprehend and embrace it.”
Accepting low blocks is unavoidable for PSG; this is their regular experience, due to the talent imbalance created by financial imbalance. Their superior ability generally prevails and the resistance is overcome with mixed ease. But it has been tougher this season.
Game Dominance However Limited Returns
The French champions have recorded nearly three-quarters of possession in the French league so far this campaign. Versus Nice last weekend, they had over 76% possession and made numerous passes, compared to just Nice's 182. Before the break, their playmaker had numerous ball contacts – merely six short than the whole Nice squad – but PSG couldn't translate superiority into goals. When the first period ended, opposition defender Bah, whose goal-bound attempt was blocked by a PSG player, had nearly scored.
This performance wasn't isolated. The Parisians had tied 75% of their recent Ligue 1 games. Dominating possession with 71% against their opponents, but were reliant on a last-minute tying goal from Mayulu to salvage a point. And, despite having 77% of the ball against Lorient in midweek, they only scored once and were ultimately held to a draw. Approximately 33% of the way into the season, PSG are ranked fifth for goals in Ligue 1 – behind multiple domestic rivals.
Forward Line Issues
It is a result of the particular attention that PSG receive, but also reflects a genuine problem. Their attackers are struggling. Ousmane Dembélé’s 29 goals last season contributed to PSG's Ligue 1 and the continental trophy; Bradley Barcola scored 14 times in the league; Désiré Doué hit 16 across all tournaments; and Their winter signing scored eight after his January move.
The forward claimed the prestigious award and, while it is debatable that the France international is indeed the global standout, it is hard to dispute that he was not the top performer of the last season. He has just five goals in 12 games this season. He encountered a muscle problem while on national team service in early autumn, which gave rise to a conflict between PSG and the national squad that has seen the relationship between the two institutions worsen. The player was absent for around a month and a half of action as a result, but he hasn't fully recovered. Following the victory against Nice, he was seen touching his muscle. “It hurts so much,” he told teammate Achraf Hakimi.
Fitness Issues
The PSG coach says the forward should be available to face Bayern Munich this week in the Champions League but, while he gets back up to speed, other players have to step up. It won’t be Doué. The former Rennes forward was also injured in the same month. He was returning to his best when he was struck down with another thigh injury, which is projected to sideline him until the new year. Kvaratskhelia is a valuable player to his team but he often reserves his top displays for the important matches in the European stage; he is still without a goal in Ligue 1 this season. Another forward, PSG’s top scorer in all competitions this season, has just one goal in his last eight appearances and is in a dry spell. A player who scores in bursts, the goals will undoubtedly return, but he can’t be expected to be the goalscorer in this high-priced PSG attack.
The Portuguese striker got the decisive goal against Nice but will he keep his place in the team?
That was the job given to their striker when he joined in 2023. The international forward achieved the landmark of 100 matches for PSG against Nice, but he has come off the bench in more than half of those appearances. With a significant portion after entering as a replacement, he has effectively embraced the role of the “impact player”, partly because of his lack of impact when starting, but mainly owing to his coach's hesitation to field a traditional striker. “Why do I score so many goals off the bench? The simple reason is I come off the bench more than I start,” quipped Ramos after the match.
Turning Point
As scoring has decreased across the attacking unit, the match-winning strike has given his boss decisions to make. The centre-forward missed three chances before scoring his final and deciding the game, but the fact that the team's clearest openings came to him is significant. He's a natural goal scorer and that is what PSG were investing in when they made a significant investment. “He's a crucial squad member for us because he is continuously available for every match, regardless of his starting status,” said Luis Enrique. “Even brief appearances from Gonçalo are valuable time.” It may be time for the impact substitute to play a leading part.
