Trump Administration Poised to Dispatch Scores Law Enforcement to the Bay Area

The Trump administration appeared poised on Wednesday to dispatch scores of government officers to the Bay Area region for a large-scale immigration enforcement operation, prompting criticism from state officials.

Information of the Deployment

Information of the mission were still emerging, but it will allegedly feature over a hundred government officers, based on information. The agents are expected to begin occupying the Coast Guard facility in the East Bay, across the bay from San Francisco. It remained unclear whether state soldiers would join the operation.

Political Response

The mission comes after weeks of statements by Donald Trump to focus on the progressive municipality. The state's leader Gavin Newsom criticized the move, calling it “taken directly from the dictator’s handbook”.

“He deploys covered agents, he deploys Border Patrol, he dispatches federal agents, he creates anxiety and fear in the community so that he can lay claim for addressing that by deploying the national guard,” he declared. “This mirrors the firestarter putting out the fire.”

City Planning

San Francisco is the newest major city focused on by the federal effort of large-scale detentions. The deployment is anticipated to provoke a showdown between the administration and local leaders who have committed to stop paramilitary operations in the city.

San Franciscans have been preparing for months for Trump to make good on ongoing warnings to deploy forces to the city. At a Wednesday media briefing, San Francisco’s municipal chief emphasized that the city was ready.

“For months, we have been anticipating the possibility of an impending federal deployment in our city,” declared the leader, noting that he had taken further executive actions on Wednesday to “enhance the city’s assistance to our immigrant communities, and make certain our offices are prepared prior to any government operation.”

Legal Framework

Regardless of judicial disputes to operations in a multiple urban areas, including Chicago, the Pacific Northwest and LA, Trump has asserted “absolute authority” to deploy the state troops in cities, citing the Insurrection Act which permits presidents limited power to dispatch personnel on American territory.

Community Reaction

Newsom, who was formerly as San Francisco’s chief executive – had committed to step in “right away” to a deployment in the city. “The notion that the national administration can dispatch personnel into our cities with no legitimate cause grounded in reality, no monitoring, no responsibility, disregard for local authority – it’s a direct assault on the rule of law,” he said on Wednesday.

Local organizations, including social justice nonprofits formed in the previous presidential term, have prepared to quickly mobilize a mass rally in the city, as well as candlelight gatherings at community centers.

Neighborhood Effect

In San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood, a largely Hispanic population, elected official informed journalists last week she and her voters had been preparing for this situation. “The point that workers cease employment, when minority individuals can’t freely walk outside without the fear of national personnel racially profiling and apprehending them, the moment when students avoid classrooms, become too afraid to go to the food market or doctor,” she said. “The readiness efforts in the Mission is essentially a closure the extent of which we haven’t seen since the health crisis.”

National Guard Status

Approximately 300 out of several thousand regional military personnel continue under national command under an order from Trump. About 200 of them had been transferred to the Pacific Northwest, where they were staying in standby during a legal battle over their assignment.

This time, Newsom said he had summoned the state military personnel under his control to operate distribution centers during the federal closure.
