Unusual Crimson Lightning Photographed in the Heavens
Three image specialists in New Zealand have managed to photograph photographs of “red sprites”, among the rarest light phenomena globally, where bright red bursts appear in the atmosphere.
A Memorable Night of Discovery
The photographers had originally set out to photograph the night sky over the distinctive clay formations in the lower part of the country on 11 October, before encountering the rare phenomenon.
Assuming they would be lucky to get clear skies that evening, but their night transformed into “a truly memorable experience,” a team member remarked.
“He was checking his images for a Milky Way panorama and discovered he had captured crimson electrical bursts,” the individual noted. “The discovery was astounding – we experienced excited exclamations and various reactions in the dark.”
Understanding Red Sprites
Red sprites are atmospheric energy releases in the mesosphere, generated by thunderstorms. Differing from conventional electrical strikes that aims at the surface, these events propel upward towards the mesospheric region, forming shapes that resemble columns, carrots or even jellyfish. The initial image of a such an event was recorded – accidentally – in that year, by a research unit at the University of Minnesota.
Brief and Ethereal Sightings
These events are extremely short-lived – lasting just a millisecond – that they are seldom seen to the naked eye, but an individual had a lucky break. “I happened to be looking straight toward an occurrence when it took place – an ideal happenstance looking at the appropriate section of the sky and I witnessed a brief red flash,” he commented.
Seeing the occurrences was a goal for the artist, an award-winning dark sky artist. “It appears as if you’re seeing an unreal vision, it feels otherworldly … the color is a profound crimson that is visible for an instant, so it’s really interesting to witness.”
Advanced and Artistic Mastery
Photographing a red sprite demands a mastery of advanced imaging techniques, as well as an understanding of science and artistic vision, he said. “This is a highly complex form of imaging that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
A different team member commented it was one of the “most incredible evenings” of his existence. “I could see the starry river illuminating above the distant edge while these enormous red tendrils of energy danced above a storm far on the horizon,” he explained.
A One-of-a-Kind Photographic Achievement
Based on his understanding, there are no further recordings showing scarlet electrical bursts and the galactic core from the southern perspective in the same photograph.
“This was a singular occasion when you understand you are seeing a phenomenon that may not recur in your lifetime.”
